Piran is beautifully situated at the tip of the Piran peninsula on the Gulf of Piran with the Croatian border close to the South. Within the old town walls, narrow streets and squares display a wealth of medieval architecture. Every year there are cultural events and festivals to celebrate local produce such as salt and olives. In the central square stands a statue of Giuseppe Tartini, a composer and virtuoso violinist. The town has various museums and galleries. On the hill above the town is the largest and most important church, the Church of Saint George, with a nearby Franciscan monastery.
