Ærøskøbing - Denmark
Ærø Island in Denmark is a small island in the Baltic Sea, dominated by hills and with three towns. Ærøskøbing is the cultural and historic centre of the island with narrow lanes, picturesque houses and cobble stoned streets from the 18th century. The town has been meticulously preserved and the impression is of travelling back through time. The port is a popular landing place for those sailing these Danish waters. Behind the preserved façade there is an active and friendly community evidenced by the work of skilled craftsmen, bricklayers, carpenters and blacksmiths. The area is excellent for walking and boating. Reward yourself with the delicious local smoked salmon and seafood.
Guesthouse 'det Gamle Hotellet' (which means 'The Old Hotel') was built by the Sverdrup-family in 1906 and is the only hotel
in the fishing village of Reine. It remained as a hotel until the 1950s, when it was converted into the local pub, but still
with rooms to rent. In the 1990s the building underwent major renovations to create a family home. The old atmosphere of the
hotel has been kept intact and today the building is both a home and a place to stay for guests. The owner, Lilian, is a creative
person, doubling as shiatsu-therapist, guesthouse manager and musician.
