This small town amongst the Sredna Gora mountains is a magnificent collection of beautifully preserved and renovated examples of unique Bulgarian architecture. As well as pretty and colourful buildings, the town possesses many ethnographical treasures, old weapons, works of art, embroidery, national costumes and typical Bulgarian jewellery. Since 1965 the National Festival of Bulgarian Folklore has taken place approximately every five years in Koprivshtitsa, gathering musicians, artists and craftsmen from across Bulgaria, performing in a rural setting in the hills. Historically, it was here that the first shot of the April Uprising against the Ottoman domination was fired in 1876.
