Porvoo is a small city in Finland, 50 kms east of Helsinki. It is one of the six medieval cities of Finland. Declared a city in the 14th century, it retains a fascinating old town with narrow, cobbled streets past gaily painted wooden houses. The central point of the old town is the ancient stone and brick cathedral. The red-painted storage sheds by the river are recommended for world heritage protection. A new bridge allowed development of a sympathetically designed new town, whilst keeping the charming centre untouched. As a coastal town Porvoo has a great collection of fish restaurants and you must try the local Runeberg's cake.
