Isolated and remote, set amongst huge, dominating mountains and spread over the island of Moskenesøya, the tiny fishing community of Reine practically at the tip of the Lofoten archipelago, is a superb place to escape, kayak, walk, climb and cycle, whale- or bird-watch or just sit back and marvel at the raw, natural, majestic beauty. Many visitors stay in rorbuers, picturesque converted fishermen's cottages. In spring this normally sparse landscape is covered in flowery meadows and in deepest winter the frost and snow covered village is a colourful foreground to the ephemeral northern lights. Complete with cafés, pubs and restaurants, you have to try the local fish dishes.
Guesthouse 'det Gamle Hotellet' (which means 'The Old Hotel') was built by the Sverdrup-family in 1906 and is the only hotel
in the fishing village of Reine. It remained as a hotel until the 1950s, when it was converted into the local pub, but still
with rooms to rent. In the 1990s the building underwent major renovations to create a family home. The old atmosphere of the
hotel has been kept intact and today the building is both a home and a place to stay for guests. The owner, Lilian, is a creative
person, doubling as shiatsu-therapist, guesthouse manager and musician.
