One of the best preserved medieval towns in Germany. Quedlinburg is packed with pretty half-timbered houses dating over four centuries, the oldest from the beginning of the 14th century. This was Germany's first capital as King Henry the Fowler ruled here from 919 A.D. From the central market square, charming, winding, cobbled streets lead up to the dominating castle, used as a convent for over 800 years. The Abbesses of the convent ruled the city until 1802, when Napoleon invaded. As befits a central German town, the bars and restaurants serve excellent beer and hearty local food from the area.
