The island of Burano, situated within the Venetian lagoon, 7 kms Northeast of Venice, is known for its brightly coloured houses. A seemingly random selection of colours is actually strictly controlled by the government. Burano is also renowned for its lace-making, a craft practised by local ladies in the warm sunshine. In the centre of town is the Church of San Martino with its distinctly leaning bell tower. Together with nearby Murano, the other major craft is glass-making with the bright colours mirroring the houses of the town. There are trattorias, bars and cafés serving excellent wines and freshly cooked fish from the lagoon.
